Hype Songs
I've been listening to a few songs this morning, mostly UK Jungle from way back when and it brought out the, yeah your the ish beast in me lol.

This UK jungle track by Shy FX and “Nobody Does It Better” by Nate Dogg and Warren G are my two go-to hype songs. However, the latter brings in a whole extra set of emotions thanks to its laid-back vibe and Nate Dogg’s smooth vocals. Am I the only one with personal sonic boosts?

Both these hits are on the December playlist
Thanksgiving
Some songs just take you back, don’t they? To that moment, that day, that place, that person—sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for not-so-good ones. It’s no wonder music is used with people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia, and why we share it with babies, children, and during special occasions.

Just this evening, I listened to a song that transported me far back in time. I felt that age again—young, energetic, carefree. Music has that incredible power to reconnect us with who we were and the memories we’ve carried.
We often pay homage to those who create the music—by listening, buying, idolizing. And we honor the people who bring it to life: DJs, radio stations, venues, mixers, producers, marketers, and everyone working behind the scenes.
Aren’t we lucky that so many people followed their passions, interests, skills, honed their talents and shared their gifts with the world?
I, for one, am deeply thankful. Without them—and without music—society would be a far sadder, duller, and lonelier place.

Devotional Parting Shot
There are certain songs that just hit you with a wave of emotions when played over a loud speaker, whether that's due to the intro, bassline, melody or the singing voice. Yesterday, it was the intro of "Walked outta Heaven" by Jagged Edge that got to me. The clarity, depth, emotion and minimal instrumentals of the intro....bringing the emotion of regret through those two black boxes - I had no choice but to focus on the song and go somewhere in emotionville. It was a little poignant being where I was but that's music for you - it hits when it hits. Thank God for the power of music and blessing us with it.

Dark Themes
SoundCloud sent me a Halloween-themed playlist (mostly rock), which got me thinking about whether other genres also explore dark or unsettling topics. After some thought, the answer was yes—every genre does. Take the Blues, for example, which literally centers on misery and hardship. Not every genre addresses literal monsters or devils—though some certainly do—but the goth and rock scenes definitely embrace those themes. In my own songs, I explore ideas like the Devil, the Reaper, and the Underworld, which I immediately associate with goth and label as such. And you know what? That’s okay, because I enjoy those styles of music and am happy to write about these themes and experiences. Yet these darker aspects of existence also appear in other musical styles. Take the songs below, for example—they aren’t necessarily spooky, but they’re undeniably dark.

-
"Breaking the Habit" by Linkin Park (2003): Written by Mike Shinoda, this song addresses a friend's substance abuse issues.
-
"Rehab" by Amy Winehouse (2006): This jazz-infused hit confronts the denial and resistance that can come with addiction.
-
"Mr. Brightside" by The Killers (2003): While upbeat, the song explores the darker side of life by describing the paranoia, jealousy, and emotional turmoil of a man who suspects his partner is cheating.
-
What Would You Do?" by the group City High, released in 2001.The song's story is told from multiple perspectives, describing the difficult life of a young mother who turns to sex work to provide for her child. It deals with themes of poverty, judgment, and desperation in a compelling, narrative format.
-
"The Hills" This track portrays a toxic and drug-fueled relationship, with lyrics that explore the dark underbelly of celebrity life
-
Mary J. Blige — "I'm Goin' Down" In this cover of a Rose Royce song, Blige's pained vocals capture the deep agony and desperation of a collapsing relationship,

My music
"Imagine", avec and sans piano is about having compassion for another's suffering. Peace / Guardian Angel - this one is whatever you make of it as peace means something different to all of us.

"Thirst/ Say" is part apology, part admitting that we're human and it was never about hurting the other person. There are three versions of this song currently, this one - to be edited, is by Carleen Liverpool. To the left are three piano compositions you can listen to on Airbit.

On repeat
These tracks have me hitting repeat—again and again.

Wolf Alice, The Sofa ( click to watch )
This one makes me happy — the sing-along lyrics totally capture that ‘yup, that’s me’ feeling, and it’s basically a celebration of doing absolutely nothing.

Offering ( click to watch )
The video is simple, and the lyrics are almost cryptic—you don't always catch what she's saying right away, but that just adds to the atmosphere. Dreamy, haunting, and a little mysterious. I'm officially a fan… I even searched for Abi Ocia concert tickets right after.

Tanerelle, Loving you ( click to watch )
It's the changing tone of this one - from the monologue at the start to the repeated lyrics, the smooth, enchanting melodic sound and stunning video visuals.

Messages through music
There’s something about Iniko’s sound, message, and visuals that deeply reminds me of my own musical style. Don’t get me wrong—I write across many genres and explore varied themes—but I recognize the otherworldly rhythms and ideologies in her work. Like many fans, I first discovered Iniko through her viral King’s Affirmation and have been a keen follower ever since with Jericho being one of my favourites. The more I listen to her music, the more it resonates with both my soul and my musical ear.

This morning, I stumbled across Earth’s Castaways. Once again, her themes—nature as our source of life and love—spoke to me. I think it’s the whistle-esque high note that runs throughout the song at varying levels, paired with the lyrics, that truly enchanted me. Sure, the track came out seven months ago, and maybe that’s considered “old” in music’s fast-moving timeline—but good music is eternal, yes?
Have you heard Earth’s Castaways yet? Or is there another Iniko track that speaks to you more? Let me know in the comments—or better yet, share a song that’s been echoing in your soul lately.

When I came across this video while searching for my next song to listen to, I thought I might have heard Lovesong before simply because it’s by The Cure - a legendary Brtish band from the 80's. But I didn’t expect to fall in love with it – what a beautiful song it is. The fact I can dance to it and the lyrics... Honestly, looking at the lead singer's painted white face and plastered red lipstick, I never would’ve guessed it was an actual love song that he would be singing – even though, well, that’s exactly what the song is called. I think I expected the title to be ironic in some way or a lot darker than it actually is. Anyhow, I believe the words tell the truth of how we should feel when we are in love or have felt love for someone. How wonderful.

U turn
If you don’t know me, I write songs and poems. While I don’t really see myself as a singer, I can carry a melody and express it well. My debut single Say was originally set to drop this September 2025, but I've decided to release Imagine instead. A song that reflects a personal realisation — that no matter how tough life feels right now, it's nothing compared to what my ancestors endured.
Still, the message remains deeply relevant to what's happening in many parts of the world today.

David is a busy person as you can imagine, so he took a while to get back to me. However when he did get back to me I asked him to describe his musical style.
